What are the school Hours of operation?
Do you have any restrictions regarding age, potty training, religion etc?
Students must be three years old and potty trained. We are open to all religions and look for a multi-cultural enrollment in each of the classrooms.
What type of programs do you offer?
We have a Montessori environment and philosophy. Our primary class has ages 3-6, and our Elementary class has ages 6-9. This multiage classroom creates a family environment that helps children learn from and teach each other. We currently offer music and art classes one to two times per week and Spanish in the classroom environment.
Is potty training required?
Yes, but if a student has a bathroom accident, we work with the child in a shameless, encouraging and nurturing way. Children are asked to bring a change of clothes for lunch spills as well as for bathroom accidents.
What is the student/teacher ratio?
We strive for a low ratio, and have been able to have a teacher and aid in each classroom plus two college students are helping in after school care.
What educational requirements are teachers and staff required to have?
We are fortunate that all our teachers have Bachelors or Masters Degrees and our lead teachers are Montessori certified. The State of Texas does not have such requirements for private schools.
Do you do a full background check on all faculty and staff members?
Yes, the state licensing requires it and a background check is done on all staff and volunteers at our school. We also check personnel references.
What are the director's credentials?
John Plevock is the director, and has met the director qualification requirements stated by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services of the Child Care Licensing Division. He has a bachelor's and a master's degree and certified as a Montessori teacher since 1992, co-founder & owner of Community School since 1991 and director since 2002.
Is anyone on-site trained in first aid and CPR?
Yes, we are required to have teachers and staff certified in CPR and first aid. This certification must be renewed every 2 years.
What is the vacation schedule?
We schedule our school calendar on the Denton Independent School District calendar, give or take a few days beginning and ending the school year. We average 170 days of school each year.
Is the school licensed and accredited by NAEYC?
Currently the school is not, but teachers are members of NAEYC, and we attend conferences and training whenever possible.
Is there flexibility for the initial adjustment period?
Yes, we are completely flexible with initial adjustment periods and encourage parents to talk to their children about good-byes and create a good-bye ritual.
Parents are welcome to stay with their child during their first visit and part of their first day, and visit during lunch. We want to empower our students' independence, and we encourage parents to allow their children to carry their own lunches and to take ownership of their possessions by putting their works and items away.
